A battle over technology, which is controlled by big business, is the setting of a new novel by a North Platte woman.

Somehow between a job as a desk clerk at Hampton Inn and chasing around two small children, 24-year-old Kayla Dodson Curry of North Platte found time to write a manuscript. Her creation, Obsidian: Mystic Stones Series, is on the shelves.

Curry’s story came to her from a dream and she began writing right away.

“It was one of those dreams that you hate to leave because you need to know how it ends,” Curry said. “I decided then that I would put pen to paper.”

The novel is a glimpse at a world where vampires are trying to rule and blood will become currency if the blood suckers ever get complete control.

A strong protagonist, Ava, is also a woman scorned, but fights to save humanity moreso than even up her personal score. She struggles against a world where human reliance on technology has the entire population sacrificing whatever they must to keep it.

In addition to entertaining readers, Curry hopes fans come away with a thought-provoking theme.

“I hope readers will see Obsidian for more than just a vampire book,” she said. “Maybe they will discover what would happen if a corporation took control of our technology – what would we do without it?”

Although it took Curry seven months of work to finish the manuscript, the search for a publisher was another nerve-wracking big step, her publicist said. After several queries a contract came from Martin Sisters Publishing LLC.

Curry, who most in her hometown knew as Kayla Dodson when she was growing up, is a 2006 graduate of North Platte High School.

Curry will be hosting book events in her hometown, including a book signing Oct. 26 downtown at A to Z Books.

Electronic versions of Obsidian: Mystic Stones Series, are at www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com.

Information about the book and the author can also be found at the publisher’s website: www.martinsisterspublishing.com

Great book. Can't wait until the next book comes out. Kayla worked very hard at this and I couldn't be more proud.
