Two students were cited too, after the search was conducted by administrators, six law enforcement agencies and four drug detection dogs.

Officers searched North Platte High School lockers, common areas and parking lot for drugs and related items.

Each of the boys were cited and released for possession of drug paraphernalia and/or less than an ounce of marijuana, according to a Lincoln County Sheriff's statement.

The search was conducted during the morning school hours. The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Broken Bow Police, Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office and Bridgeport Police brought canine units.

North Platte Police spokesman Rodney Brown said the dogs sniffed nearly 1,500 lockers and checked out 700 parking stalls. The dogs alerted (indicating the odor of drugs) at 17 lockers and five vehicles.

Two male students were cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. One of them also was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia, Brown said.

Brown said a vehicle with three non-student men suspiciously drove past during the parking lot search and returned 20 minutes later, carrying two people. Officers questioned the driver, Dylan Herrick, 21. His passenger, who was not named, tried to conceal a container, later found to contain trace amounts of marijuana, from the investigating officer, Brown said.

Herrick was found with marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He too was cited and released, Brown said. Apparently, the passenger was not cited.

Brown said the search lasted about an hour. The sheriff's office said it was a three-hour process.

Authorities are still following up on what they found, the sheriff said.

More searches may be conducted at North Platte High and other area schools in an ongoing effort to curb unlawful activities in or on school property, the sheriff's office said.
