Mail: Ban automoblies, they could hurt someoneTell North Platte what you think

I see where, in Los Angeles, a soon-to-be 101-year-old driver backed his Cadillac over a curb into a group of grade school kids and their parents, injuring 11 of them.

We must take immediate action so this kind of tragedy does not happen again. The solution is so clear and easy. We must ban automobiles or at the very least, Cadillacs.

While we’re at it, if we’ll just ban silverware, we can end the dubious American distinction of being the most overweight county in the world.

If you do not understand my point, you probably never will.

Yet automobile deaths are more numerous than firearm deaths in this country every year. Many of those automobile deaths are of innocent people who arein the wrong place at the wrong time. True, a firearm was originally designed with the purpose of killing. Many today are not manufactured with that purpose in mind. A lot more are purchased with the intent to not kill anything, humanor otherwise, just to shoot. The point, the vast majority of people who buy automobiles or firearms don't do it with the intent to kill other people. Sometimes that intent changes, both for autos and cars. Sometimes, accidents happen. In either scenerio, it is the person, not theobject that is the root of the problem. Oh, that and auto ownership is not a guarantee laid out in the Constitution...

The implied comparison in the this story is ridiculous. An automobile is designed as a mode of transportation, on the other hand guns are designed to kill, (whether defensively, offensively, or hunting). But both can be used for killing, but only the gun is designed to do it effectively and efficiently with little effort.

Once again the intellectual failings of somone are presented...a license to drive a car is only required if: 1. it is going to be operated on public roads; and, 2. if the person operating the car on public roads wants to do it legally. Like having a car insured and registered is required to operate them on public roads, and we all know that every car out there driving down the road is both duly registered and insured. Seriously, think before posting...

You do NOT have to have a license to operate a vehicle. There are already laws on the books intending on stopping mentally unstable individuals from owning firearms. There are laws intended to prevent convicted felons from owning firearms. It is also illegal to shoot someone. The only ones who are affected by any of these or any other law are those who make the CHOICE to abide by them.

@Mike....I agree with you that there are certain people in the world that should have nothing to do with a car or a gun....The problem is that increasing regulations on such things only makes it harder for law abiding citizens to own them and really does nothing to stop a non law abiding citizen from owning them.......In Fact, there have been polls done in the past that show most criminals are in favor of stronger gun ownership laws, because it means that the innocent people they intend on robbing will have less of a chance of being armed and therefore less chance of stopping or causing harm to the criminal.

You want to know something? The difference between a car and a gun is that you actually have to have a license to operate the car. Some people shouldn't and\or can't operate automobiles, the very elderly (as is in Sheesley's letter to the editor), the physically impaired, the drunks, etc etc. Nobody ever said "lets take away all guns from all people", its only been suggested to prevent those who cannot responsibly use them from owning them. A mentally unstable person who shoots up a movie theater is a good example.

While we're at it, Lets ban pencils and pens to save us all from the horror of misspelled words!! Bottom line, Its stupid to blame a inanimate object for anything....Its inanimate, It requires a human being for it to operate, Blame the human being! Thanks for the post Dan!

There are simply no need for such a large assault vehicles like Cadillacs with fully automatic transmissions. They are responsible for vast amounts of property damage as well as loss of life. We need to follow the example of Mackinac Island. They have NO vehicles and NO vehicle deaths.
