Old Lincoln Highway route through western Nebraska
|
The Great Platte River Road Archway is teaming up with the Lincoln Highway Association to inform students who live along the U.S. Highway 30 or old Lincoln Highway of how the first transcontinental highway was formed. The Lincoln Highway, America’s first transcontinental highway, celebrates its 100th anniversary next year. A full-color guide provides background information and objectives, standards and activities to introduce the project to the classroom. Miss Emily Post will be stopping at St. Pat’s high school at 8:15 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 28 to help raise awareness and enthusiasm for the upcoming Lincoln Highway Centennial Celebration. Miss Post, reenacted by Archway’s Ronnie O’Brien along with Dawna Ourada, will introduce students to the Lincoln Highway Era, and provide suggestions as to how they can be a part of the centennial celebration in 2013. Twin auto tours will commence June 23, 2013 on both coasts, with antique, classic and contemporary cars. The tours will time their arrival in Kearney for noon June 30, 2013. When the Lincoln Highway Association began raising money for the new highway in 1913, school children from as far away as Alaska sent pennies to help. Students today are encouraged to save and collect pennies to help decorate the Lincoln Highway in North Platte, Ourada said.
