Lt. Rich Hoaglund of the North Platte Police.

Huskeradio’s third annual Battle of the Badges produced 118 pints of blood for the American Red Cross – the most yet in one year.

The “battle” was a competition between firefighter and law officers to see who could donate the most. The police won by about 15 pints, organizer Kristi Halley said. The firefighters won the previous two years.

Halley said some walk-in donors left before they donated, because they didn't have enough time to wait in relatively long lines.

It was a “great, playful theme that supported a serious cause in a fun way,” said Red Cross spokeswoman April Oppliger.

The donation day was set on Sept. 11, the anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on the United States. Donations were accepted for six hours.

Previous Battles of the Badges have produced about 95 pints each year, Halley said.

The sponsors included Runza, Subway, Dominos, Canteen Bar and Grill, Walgreen’s, Quality Inn and Suites and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Halley also expressed gratitude to law enforcement, the fire department and the community.
