West central water, crops field day set Sept. 13Tell North Platte what you think

Agricultural water use will be in the spotlight Sept. 13 at the West Central Water and Crops Field Day in North Platte.

In one of the driest years on record, the impact of water, or lack of it, is inescapable across the state. The field day, at the West Central Research and Extension Center, will help producers make more efficient use of water in their operations.

Registration is requested by Sept. 7. The program begins with registration and exhibits at 8 a.m., followed by a program from 9 a.m.-3:40 p.m.

Morning presentations will address ag water use topics and the afternoon will feature a tour of research and field demonstrations.

Presentation titles include: “Breeding Crops for Water Use Efficiency,” “Consumptive Water Use in Nebraska,” “The Cost of Water” and “A New Era for Water Perspectives.”

Afternoon tour stops will cover: “Invasive Weeds and Horticulture,” “Irrigation Research and Drought-tolerant Corn Hybrids,” “Nutrient and Water Management Strategies to Optimize Yields” and “Pesticides and Traits for Improving Agricultural Productivity.”

While the event is free, participants are asked to register by Sept. 7, so appropriate plans can be made for meals, teaching resources and tour logistics. For more information or to register, see the program brochure, http://bit.ly/NsrjAc, or call the UNL West Central Research and Extension Center at 308-696-6701 or email ellen.heil@unl.edu

CCA credits have been applied for in soil and water.
