Community walk set for suicide prevention Tell North Platte what you think

Sadly, every minute of every day, someone attempts to take their own life and every 15 minutes someone in the United States dies by suicide.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is conducting the second annual “Out of the Darkness” community walk in North Platte on Sept. 22 at Centennial Park.

The goal is to raise funds for suicide prevention and education. Portions of the money raised will support distribution of AFSP’s new educational film “More Than Sad: Teen Depression” to high schools to educate both students and teachers about teen depression and how to get help.

“We need to know more about suicide and ways to prevent it,” organizer Mellissa Millard said. “We also need to educate the public to recognize the symptoms of depression, especially in teenagers as they are a particularly vulnerable group.”

Millard’s goal is to open a support group and further suicide prevention efforts in North Platte and surrounding communities with much needed education in the schools.
