Spending growth, including the surplus years under President Bill Clinton.

Sen. Mike Johanns said Tuesday that Congress must work in a bipartisan way to reduce spending and overhaul the income tax system, as the national debt surpassed $16 trillion.

Johanns said President Obama has failed to deliver on a campaign promise four years ago to cut the national debt in half.

ďInstead, our debt has grown $5 trillion," Johanns said. "This fiscal crisis, however, doesnít just impact one party. It affects every American, and thatís why Iím working across the aisle to find a solution.

ďBoth parties must come together to reduce spending and reform our nationís antiquated tax code so the country we leave for our children and grandchildren is as prosperous as the one we inherited,Ē he said.

Johanns spent August traveling across Nebraska talking about our countryís economy and debt.

He is part of on-going, bipartisan discussions to develop a comprehensive solution to our nationís dire fiscal situation, he said.
