Sen. Mike Johanns said Tuesday that Congress must work in a bipartisan way to reduce spending and overhaul the income tax system, as the national debt surpassed $16 trillion. Johanns said President Obama has failed to deliver on a campaign promise four years ago to cut the national debt in half. “Instead, our debt has grown $5 trillion," Johanns said. "This fiscal crisis, however, doesn’t just impact one party. It affects every American, and that’s why I’m working across the aisle to find a solution. “Both parties must come together to reduce spending and reform our nation’s antiquated tax code so the country we leave for our children and grandchildren is as prosperous as the one we inherited,” he said. Johanns spent August traveling across Nebraska talking about our country’s economy and debt. He is part of on-going, bipartisan discussions to develop a comprehensive solution to our nation’s dire fiscal situation, he said.
