Candidates Deb Fischer and Bob Kerrey will square off at 4 p.m. Saturday in a debate at the Nebraska State Fair – their first face-to-face debate of the U.S. Senate campaign.

The debate will be held in the Heartland Events Center and will be broadcast on RFD-TV. It will also be streamed live on the Omaha World-Herald and Grand Island Independent websites.

Kerrey is a former Nebraska governor and U.S. Senator who owns fitness centers and restaurants in Lincoln and Omaha. Fischer has been a state lawmaker for eight years in the Nebraska Legislature. She and her husband operate a Sandhills ranch near Valentine.

Fischer has said she will debate Kerrey three times before the November election. No other dates have been announced.

Kerrey is eager to debate. He recently accepted a debate offer from Fox News, which Fischer has not accepted.

The debate would appear live on “Fox News Sunday” with Chris Wallace and a taped version would appear on the Fox News Cable Channel later in the day, Kerrey said Saturday.

Kerrey pointed out that he is willing to go into what would be Fischer-friendly territory on Fox television.

“If she isn’t willing to go on Fox News and debate me, how could she engage in debate on the floor of the Senate?” he said.

The two are reportedly talking to Omaha television station KETV, Channel 7, but Kerrey said Monday that Fischer will not meet to work out the date and time.
