Two Wyoming men were arrested Monday afternoon after one of them walked into the Farmer's State Bank in Wallace, waved a handgun and tried to rob the place. The would-be robber left without any money, but he threatened three or four employees with the gun, Lincoln County Sheriff Jerome Kramer said. He was wearing black clothes and a black ski mask, carrying a large backpack and a semi-automatic handgun, witnesses told investigators. A driver waited outside in silver ¾ ton Ford pickup, and the two allegedly sped south out of town on Morning View Road. No one was hurt. The would-be robber came into the bank lobby around 12:40 p.m. When he asked for money, he was told the money was locked up and he turned around and left, bank president Bob Mayber told the Bulletin. "The news is that no one was hurt," Mayber said. "Amazing." Mayber said the man "displayed" the gun and employees in the back offices of the bank were not affected. Law officers across the state were alerted, and dispatchers personally called departments in adjoining counties, Chief Lincoln County Deputy Roland Kramer told the Bulletin. About an hour later, an Imperial police officer stopped the pickup about a mile north of Imperial on Nebraska Highway 61, assisted by the Chase County Sheriff's Office. Chase County deputies determined the men and the vehicle were very close matches to what Lincoln County had reported, Chief Deputy Kramer said. Through digital images, witnesses confirmed the vehicle and subjects were the same they had seen at the bank. The two men were taken into custody without a fight and held in Chase County while Lincoln County issued the appropriate warrants, Chief Deputy Kramer said. Drew Alexander Steier, 19, and Tracy Neal Black, 52, both of Evanston, Wyo. were arrested. Steier was initially charged with robbery and use of a firearm to commit a felony. Black was initially charged with robbery. More charges are possible, Chief Deputy Kramer said. Both are held on $500,000 bonds. Chief Deputy Kramer credited witnesses in Wallace for describing the suspects and the pickup, as well as the Imperial and Chase County officers who stopped the pickup and took the pair into custody. The FBI is also working on the investigation. Wallace is a village of about 350 people in southern Lincoln County.
