Despite rumors, no changes are planned to railroad worker's retirement, at least as far as the latest budget passed by the U.S. House of Representatives goes.

Rep. Adrian Smith will be at Heidi's Restaurant in North Platte at 8 a.m. Aug. 22 to talk about the situation.

Smith recently voted with Republicans on a federal budget to cut the ballooning federal deficit.

Smith said America’s looming debt crisis is the most predictable – and avoidable – economic calamity in our nation’s history.

He blames both parties.

"Make no mistake: empty promises from both political parties have gotten us where we are today," he said. "This explosion of debt, now rapidly approaching $16 trillion, is threatening to cripple our nation and rob our children and grandchildren of their future."

Smith said the House of Representatives has passed a budget for the second year in a row. He said it is "honest with the American people about the difficult decisions ahead."

The budget is known as the Path to Prosperity.

"The plan would lift the crushing burden of debt by cutting trillions in spending, balancing the budget without job-killing tax hikes, and creating a long-term blueprint for economic growth," he said.

Smith has heard from many Nebraskans concerned about how the House-passed budget would impact the retirement benefits of railroad workers.

"It is important to note the budget passed by the House did not affect the Railroad Retirement System," he said.

"As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over trust fund operations relating to the Railroad Retirement System, I supported a deficit reduction package required by the House budget, which did not alter Railroad Retirement benefits.

"Railroad Retirement is a separate account from Social Security, and it has not and will not affect the deficit because it already has internal mechanisms in place to address funding shortfalls.

"As Congress continues to address the federal budget, I will continue to protect the Railroad Retirement System, while we work to promote meaningful spending reforms to balance our budget and pay down our debt.
