North Platte’s unemployment rate is dropping. Overall, 418 more people are working in the North Platte area than at the same time last year, according to the Nebraska Department of Labor. The North Platte area consists of three counties -- Lincoln, Logan and McPherson, according to the department. The unemployment rate in that area dropped from 4.1 percent to 3.4 percent. Most of the new jobs came in leisure and hospitality trades – such areas as motels and recreation. On the other hand, transportation, trade, warehousing and utility jobs fell by 225, the department said. That includes the railroad and trucking as well as gas and electric companies. Other highlights: • Construction jobs increased by 137. • 40 new jobs in retail trades. • 55 new jobs in professional and business services • 17 new jobs in financial activities. • 124 new jobs in goods production. • There was just one new job in wholesale trades. • 94 fewer jobs in local government. At the end of June, there were 799 unemployed in the North Platte area, the report said. Overall, that was 155 fewer claims than a year ago.
State & nation Statewide, the unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent, down from 4.5 percent a year ago. There are 15,171 more jobs in the state than a year ago. Nearly 500 construction workers went back to work, the report said. Nationwide, the unemployment rate stayed at 8.3 percent throughout the year, the report said.
