A Lincoln woman is helping the Nebraska Humane Society look for money and supplies to care for neglected horses. Recently 16 horse in various stages of starvation were seized from a farm near Petersburg. One of them, 27-year-old Star helped all of her owner's kids learn how ride horses, said Colleen Hamer, a former North Platte resident. "It was a sickening fact that the owner let her get in this condition after all she had done for him," Hamer said. Star was put down Thursday. Hamer said the Nebraska Humane Society is going to name their new Rehabilitation Program after her. The first negelected horses were rescued July 13. Six more were rescued July 24, including two pair of mares and colts. The Humane Society is in the process of putting together a rehabilitation program for horses that they bring in from situations like this, Hamer said. They are building pens and putting up panels at a local horse facility. "We are looking for donations of time, labor, hay, money and materials for the program," Hamer said. "We need to build small shelters for the horses and we need to fence some areas for pasture." If interested in helping, contact the Nebraska Humane Society at 444-7800 or go to: HERE.
