HASTINGS-The North Platte First National Bank Seniors have their backs against the wall after losing 5-4 to Twin Cities on Friday in the first game of the Area 7 tournament at Duncan Field. The First Nationals (24-23) will play Hastings on Saturday for the right to go to the state tournament in the first district elimination game. North Platte scored the first run on Friday in the fourth inning when Drew Beyer hit a line drive to center field off of Twin Cities pitcher Joe Sanchez. But in the bottom of the fourth, Twin Cities (37-19) scored two runs to take the lead. In the top of the fifth inning, Ben Sukraw reached base after Tharyn Curtis dropped a fly ball in left field and it was the last pitch thrown by Sanchez, who was abruptly replaced by Eric Moreno. Jack Kenny brought home Sukraw to tie the game and then Taylor Williams hit a two-run single to right to give the First Nationals a 4-2 lead. But that was all the production North Platte could muster against Moreno. Twin Cities cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth when Curtis hit a two-out single against Jamie McKain. Then in the seventh, Moreno tied the game at four runs apiece with a two-out single to left. That set the stage for the bottom of the ninth and Joe Moran led off with a booming triple to right off of McKain. Moreno then hit a fly ball to left that was caught by Kenny but Kenny airmailed the throw home to Beyer, the catcher, and Moran scored tagging up to win the game for the Zephyrs. North Platte, with its season on the line, will turn to ace pitcher Kade Folchert on Saturday against Hastings.
