The 2012 Northern National girls softball tournament is less than a month away and North Platte's organizing committee is calling for volunteers to help make it smooth and succesful. As many as 80 softball teams from the northern half of the United States will come to North Platte for a week -- July 30-Aug. 5. The tournament could bring more than 1,200 people to town for the week, including coaches, competitors, family members and fans. The tournament is for girls, ages 16 and under. "Volunteers are at the heart of any event in North Platte and the Northern National Tournament is no exception,” said North Platte/Lincoln County Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Lisa Burke. “From the check-in of the teams on July 30 through the championship game on Aug. 5, it will take an army of volunteers to make the tournament run smoothly.” Volunteers will serve as ambassadors, help prepare fields and everything in between, Burke said. The visitors for the week could infuses as much of $2 million into the local economy, Burke said. A job well done will put North Platte on the map for winning bids for future tournaments and events of this kind, Burke said. Some of the available volunteer positions include team check-in, team welcome party, community ambassadors, manager’s meeting, opening ceremonies, infield crew, hospitality room, concession stands, and admission gates. Volunteers will receive a Northern National Tournament tee-shirt plus admission to the tournament. Shifts are 4-5 hours long. Volunteer registration is available at http://staynorthplatte.com/volunteers/volunteer_information/ or by calling the Jeff Boeka, the tournament volunteer organizer at 308-532-9500.
