Due to a new city bus barn this is under construction, plus the proximity to ball fields and parks; the free drop-off site for yard waste and tree debris will close permanently at 4 p.m. Friday. The drop-off site will move near the Lake Maloney inlet from its location at 1402 N. Jeffers, next to the city public service department. The new bus barn at 16th and Jeffers is going up rapidly. City Administrator Jim Hawks has said the barn might be usuable by the time the Northern National ASA softball tournament is held July 30-Aug. 5. Also, 16th St. has been paved as part of the project. For residents, excess yard waste and tree debris must now be taken to the city transfer station and compost site near the inlet, public service director Wes Meyer said. There will be no charge to residents who pay for garbage collection, Meyer said. Normal dump tipping fees will be charged to commercial and for-hire generators and contractors. The city’s transfer station and compost site is open 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Drop-offs of yard waste, tree debris or any other refuse can only be made at those times, Meyer said.
