Ronald Denton of North Platte allegedly hit his domestic partner several times and tried to strangle her, prosecutor Jennifer Wellan said Tuesday in Lincoln County Court. Police were called to Great Plains Regional Medical Center at about 9 p.m. Monday, to investigate an alleged assault that occurred in a home in the 100 block of N. Hayes. Melissa Sovine said she had been assaulted by Denton after an argument. Police found probable cause to make the arrest, which they did the next day, according to a North Platte police spokesman. In court Tuesday, Deputy County Attorney Jennifer Wellan said Denton strangled Sovine and also struck her on the head several times. Denton, 51, asked to be released to work in the deli at the Westfield Sun Mart. Lincoln County Judge Kent Turnbull set bond at $5,000 and said if Denton could post 10 percent he would be released. Denton is charged with third degree domestic assault, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
