Wahlert and Coleman both earned the high score of 79 in the finals to split the title to edge out Dustin Elliott of North Platte, who had a 77. Sutherland's Trey Kerner was fourth with a score of 65.

In bareback riding, Tom McFarland of Bowie, Texas won with a score of 88 to beat out fellow Texan Will Lowe of Canyon, who got an 87.

Cole Elshere of Faith, S.D. won the saddlebronc riding with 84 points. Jesse James Kirby of Dodge City, Kan. was second with 83.

In steer wrestling, Stockton Graves of Newport, Okla. won with an average of 8.3 seconds and in tie down roping, Cody Quaney of Cheney, Kan. took the title with an average of 20.4 seconds.

In team roping, two pairs tied for first place. Garrett Nokes of McCook and Matt Wilken of Smithfield shared the title with Scott White and Jade Nelson of South Dakota, both with a time of 5.4 seconds.

Randa Kellogg of Point, Texas won the barrel racing with a time of 17.23 seconds.

Good year for Elshere

by Ruth Nicolaus

Elshere rode Beutler and Son Rodeo Co.’s -518 Dipsy Doodle, who was in a new role this weekend.

“She was a bareback horse and this was one of the first times she’s bucked in the bronc riding,” Elshere said.

He didn’t know what to expect of his ride, but the horse worked.

“She kind of came out (of the chute), took a little scoot, was real wild, and then got really nice. She was a good horse. Now guys will be wanting to get on her because we’ve seen how good she is.”

Elshere, who is currently ranked sixth in the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings, is on a roll, having won titles at the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City, S.D., Guymon, Okla., and Medford, Wisc.

It hasn’t changed his strategy for qualifying for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

“I’m just trying to stay real consistent, trying to stay healthy, and eat healthy, stay flexible, and focus on the things I did right on the good rides,” he said.

And the sandwich restaurants in North Platte have figured into his healthy eating habits. “As much as I’m home, I get to eat a lot of good cooking there. This month, we’ll be gone a lot. We eat a lot of Subway.”

Elliot

In bull riding, North Platte resident Dustin Elliott was one of only five cowboys all week to make a qualified ride. Elliott, who is the 2004 Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association World Champion, has won the title twice at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo.

This year he won third place.
