Caine Riddle of Vernon, Texas, spurs for 84 points on a bareback Friday.
For Texas cowboy Tom McFarland, the Buffalo Bill Rodeo is a nostalgic, old time rodeo.
He’s competed in North Platte since 2001, and on Friday night, he scored 88 points to take over the lead in the bareback riding.
The Bowie, Texas cowboy has been to rodeo’s world championship, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, four times, but has had a slow winter and isn’t ranked in the top 15 in the world. But the busy summer rodeo season is about to begin.
“I’ve had a slow year, but we’re entered up from about every day dang near till July 7, so we’ll be getting after it,” he said.
McFarland loves the North Platte event. “We enter every year,” he said, referring to himself and his traveling partners Caine Riddle, Wes Stevenson, and Will Lowe. “Besides the nostalgia of this being an old time rodeo, it’s Bennie Beutler’s horses, and he brings buckers.”
“We’re bareback riders, and we feed off getting scared. Bennie’s got some big scary (horses), and we love coming to his rodeos," he said.
In the steer wrestling, a Colorado cowboy turned Husker had the fast time of the night.
Chad Van Campen, who grew up in Granada, Colo. but now lives in McCook, turfed his steer in 3.8 seconds to tie for third place so far.
Van Campen, who has been a Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association member since 1998, is riding a horse he trained himself. His 12 year old gelding “has been kind of a handful,” Van Campen said. “I took him to a bunch of amateur rodeos and won a saddle on him, and won Guymon (Okla.) rodeo on him last year. He’s getting more trustworthy and earning his keep.”
Other leaders after Friday night are world champion team ropers Nick Sartain and Kollin VonAhn; tie-down roper Mitch McAdow, Littleton, Colo., saddle bronc rider Cody Taton, Mud Butte, S.D., and barrel racer Angie Meadors, Blanchard, Okla. The only bull rider to make the eight second buzzer was Kris Newman, Casper, Wyo., with a 61 point ride.
The final night of rodeo in North Platte is Saturday, when champions will be crowned and buckles awarded to winners.
The big rodeo parade takes place on Saturday at 1 pm. For more information, visit www.NEBRASKAlandDays.com.
