For timed event cowboy Garrett Nokes, the Buffalo Bill Rodeo is like a hometown rodeo. Only 70 miles away, North Platte is the closest pro rodeo for the McCook native. And he made the most of his trip on Thursday night. The three-event cowboy made a steer wrestling run of 3.9 seconds for the fastest time of the night, and his team roping run yesterday put him and partner Matt Wilkens in a split for first place after two days of the four day rodeo. And, Nokes also competed in tie-down roping. While most cowboys only specialize in one event, the 36-year-old Nokes has worked three events since high school. In college, he qualified for the College National Finals in all three events, and then as a member of the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association, he quit team roping and focused on steer wrestling and tie-down. Now, he’s returned to team roping. It's a matter of efficiency. “With fuel prices the way they are now, it doesn’t make sense to not enter all three, because you need as many chances (to win) as you can get, when you get there," he said. He may by within reach of the all-around title, and he is excited about it. “I love winning the all-around at any rodeo, and for this one, it’d be extra special,” he said. Nokes won the Buffalo Bill Rodeo steer wrestling title in 1999, and the tie-down roping title one year earlier. “I’ve always really enjoyed it and seemed to do well there. I have lots of friends there," he said. In the tie-down roping, a family name synonymous with rodeo took the lead. Clint Cooper, son of eight-time world champion Roy Cooper, kept up the tradition at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo Thursday. Cooper roped his calf in 9.4 seconds to take the lead during slack this morning. This is the first year he competed in North Platte. Cooper has qualified for four Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and is on track for his fifth WNFR, with a 12th place ranking in the world standings. Tie-down roping, for him, “is really competitive. You have to have good horses, be athletic, and be on the top of your game 24-7. It’s awesome.” After he roped in North Platte, he and his traveling partner were headed to Canada for rodeos there. Other leaders from the second night of rodeo were: bareback rider Heath Ford, Slocum, Texas; saddle bronc rider Cole Elshere, Faith, S.D.; team ropers Scott White, Oelrichs, S.D. and Jade Nelson, Midland, S.D.; and barrel racer Kasey Etbauer, Goodwell, Okla. In the bull riding, Shawn Coleman, Springfield, S.D. was the only man to make the eight second buzzer tonight. Night number three of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo is Friday, June 15 at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. Tickets are available online at www.NebraskaLandDays.com, at the NLD office or at the gate.
