High school fans can cheer on their favorites in a new event -- motocross racing -- at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo this week in North Platte. The newly formed Budke High School Moto-cross Chute out will feature mini-bike races by eight high school coaches and athletic directors each night of rodeo. The racers will come out of the gate and run around a clover-leaf course in the arena. The format is a bracket play off, with winners advancing each night to the final round June 16. The champion will walk away with bragging rights and $250 for his school’s booster club. On Wednesday night, two premier football coaches face off when North Platte St. Patrick coach Kevin Dodson challenges Maxwell coach Ryan Jones. On Thursday, Stapleton’s Phyical Education teacher and activities director Matt Brown will head off against Thedford/Sandhills High Athletic Director Scott Leisy. On Friday night, two runs will take place: Sutherland’s girls basketball coach Jason Gunderson battles Hershey’s boys basketball coach Dustin Jorgenson, and North Platte High football coach Bernie Madison takes on Brady girls basketball coach Lance Arterburn.
Bulletin Sports Editor James Parrish predicts that Dustin Jorgenson of Hershey will win the championship, narrowly defeating Ryan Jones in the finals. "Jorgenson seems to be type of guy that would like to ride a motorcycle, and he's got the size and attitude," Parrish said.
The winners from each bracket compete Saturday in the semi-finals and then in the finals. “It’s a fun way to involve community schools, coaches, and rivalries,” rodeo chairman Jack Morris said. “We hope to make it an annual event.” The Budke High School Moto-cross Chute Out will take place between rodeo events each night. The rodeo starts at 8 p.m. on Wednesday-Saturday, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. For more information, visit the NebraskalandDays website at NebraskalandDays.com or call the office at 308.532.7939.
