The most popular video of the North Platte Canteen on the Internet now has 1.2 million views. Soon after World War II began, a group of kind-hearted women baked cookies and went down to meet the train. So begins the story of the famous North Platte Canteen of WWII -- a story that continues to circulate, when volunteers greeted millions of soldiers at the North Platte train depot. The popular youtube video was produced by a ministerial group that helps veterans. The ministry says the Canteen story helps put “faith in the foxhole and hope on the home front.” According to organizer Col. Joe Rodriguez, U.S. Army (Ret.), nearly 1 in 5 troops are trapped by post-traumatic stress disorder. Only 40-percent seek help. Rodriguez said our troops fight with great courage but, amongst all veterans, suicide rates are nearly double that of non-veterans. Nearly 2 of 3 military marriages ended in divorce in 2010 alone, according to the Military Ministry. Like the Canteen, Military Ministry knows they can’t bring healing alone to troops. They mobilized thousands of churches and tens of thousands of lay professional counselors on behalf of combat trauma sufferers. To see the “million-selling” Canteen video, click HERE. Also, British folk singer Denis Hurst performs an original song about the Canteen on another youtube, simply titled "North Platte Canteen." Hurst said “the state passed into legend as a kind of holy ground.” That video is HERE. Also, this article would be remiss not to mention the best-selling book “Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen," written by Bob Greene of Chicago.
