“The Marvelous Wonderettes” continues Saturday and Sunday downtown at the Neville Center for Performing Arts – the former Fox Theater. The play takes audiences on a musical journey back in time. Veteran actors Leah Purdy, Donna Pucket, Deb Stadler-Stone and Vicky Van Velson had the crowd tapping their feet and singing along through the performances. The Marvelous Wonderettes, written and created by Roger Bean, takes the audience to the 1958 senior prom at Springfield High. After the scheduled entertainment, The Crooning Crab Cakes (otherwise known as the Boys Glee Club) were ousted because a lead singer had a smoking habit, the “Wonderettes” -- Missy, Suzy, Cindy Lou and Betty Jean -- are asked to fill in. They perform hits from the 50s such as, Lollipop, Mr. Sandman and Mr. Lee, and the audience learns about the ups in downs in the lives of the young women. In the second act, the Wonderettes are asked to perform at the 10-year reunion of the class of '58. Using 1960s classics such as Leader of the Pack, With This Ring, You Don’t Own Me and Son of a Preacher Man, the “Wonderettes” tell stories about life and love since high school, as well as friendships that endure through most anything. Central Nebraska residents have two more opportunities to see the show – at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available at www.northplattecommunityplayhouse.org, or at the playhouse from noon-5 p.m., by calling (308) 532-8559 or at the door an hour before curtain time. The production is made possible in part by The Nebraska Arts Council, The Nebraska Cultural Endowment of the Arts and our Sponsors, McChesney, Martin and Sagehorn P.C. and Integrated Computer Solutions.
