A 32-year-old Omaha man is in custody after leading officers on an early morning chase, officials said Monday. Around 3:18 a.m., the Omaha Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle near 40th and Dodge. The driver had been involved in a disturbance at a residence and struck an OPD cruiser as he was attempting to drive away, Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said. The Omaha policeman pursued west on I-80 to the Douglas/Sarpy County line, where the Nebraska State Patrol took over the pursuit, which continued west on I-80 and reached speeds of 80 mile an hour, Collins said. Spikes strips were used several times, each time puncturing tires on the vehicle. Near 56th St. interchange (mile marker 405), troopers forced the vehicle off the road. The vehicle went into the north ditch, then up and over an embankment before stopping in a marshy area on the north side of I-80. Once the vehicle stopped, the driver, Joseph K. Black, 32, Omaha, got out of the SUV holding a small dog. He pointed his finger at officers and made shooting noises, Collins said. Black was tased by a Lancaster County deputy and taken into custody. He was cited for flight to avoid arrest, driving under suspension and driving without headlights, then taken to Omaha and placed in the custody of the OPD. The pursuit lasted approximately 35 minutes in four counties (Douglas, Sarpy, Cass, and Lancaster) and reached speeds of 80 mph. Agencies involved include OPD, NSP, LSO and the Lincoln Police Department, Collins said.
