Kenneth Berglund was pronounced dead at the scene two miles east of Cozad.

The truck, owned by M-R-K Inc., hit a guardrail and rolled in the westbound lane just after 5 a.m. The passing lane was closed for several hours. Traffic was diverted to U.S. Hwy 30.

According to a Nebraska State Patrol spokesman, a second vehicle came upon the accident and hit debris on the roadway after the accident.

The couple, traveling from Minnesota, were uninjured.

The grain on the road also brought numerous deer onto the highway, causing numerous drivers to swerve to avoid them, the NSP said.

The NSP, Dawson County Sheriff’s Department and Cozad Police handled the accident. It remains under investigation.

Fatality crash

The NSP continues to investigate a crash that killed a North Carolina man Monday.

The Patrol says 34-year-old Robert Osland of Mooresville, N.C., was killed Monday afternoon when his vehicle crossed the center line of the highway and collided with a semitrailer truck.

The accident happened on U.S. Highway 92 about three miles west of McGrew shortly before 2 p.m. Monday.

Officials say it's not clear why Osland's vehicle crossed the highway into oncoming traffic.

Serious injuries

The NSP is also investigating a crash two miles south of Curtis Sunday.

Officials from the NSP said Jeremy Widick, 37, from Lincoln, was ejected from a single vehicle rollover on Hwy. 18 at 2:42 Sunday morning. Two passengers in the car were not ejected although all the occupants were not wearing seatbelts, according to the NSP.

NSP officials said the other passengers in the car climbed out of the wreckage and were treated and released from an area hospital.

Widick, whose parents live in Curtis, was life flighted to Kearney. He remained in serious condition Tuesday.

NSP officials suspected alcohol and speed were factors in the single car accident.

Hit and run

A Burwell man was cited for leaving the scene of an accident Sunday after he allegedly sideswiped a car on Interstate 80, causing the vehicle to roll over.

Lyle J. Rowse, 28, was caught after a witness to the incident called 911.

The accident occurred at 4 p.m. July 25.

The victim told NSP investigators that he was driving down I-80, and minding his own business, when the car suddenly swerved over and sideswiped him. His car left the roadway and rolled, collapsing the roof and doors.

Officials battle burning potatoes

NSP officials along with the Ogallala Fire Department and the Keith County volunteer fire department battled a semi-trailer fire for nearly four hours Sunday after a semi-load of potatoes exploded on I-80.

The westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for nearly four hours Sunday as the semi and trailer burned to the ground.

NSP investigators aren’t sure what caused the explosion but the truck and trailer were fully engulfed when officials arrived on the scene. The driver, from Ontario Candad, managed to escape the fire without injury.

“Potatoes are everywhere,” called an official from the scene. The fire caused the cargo to continue to explode, causing potatoes to fly out of the truck and onto the highway and median and ditch.

The ditch and median caught on fire, necessitating the need for the fire departments, the NSP said.

It was unclear if ketchup was trucked to the scene.

The interest accrued from the Newburn fund has slowed to a trickle, thanks to low rates. Plans for using that money to better North Platte’s parks, however, are in no short supply.
