Postseason all-star games are not supposed to be one-sided. But in the Mid-Plains Area All-Star girls' basketball game, the Gold team dominated the Black team from the start to win going away 72-51 on Friday at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. "We came out and shot the ball well from the start," said Gold coach Darren Tobey, who will be leaving Brady to take over at Southern Valley. "Watching us practice the last couple of days, I knew we were fast and I knew if we could defend and rebound, we could get out and run." The Gold, which was led in scoring by North Platte High School graduate Anna Woodhead with 17 points, got off to a fast start and led as much as 20 points in the first half before going into halftime with a 38-24 lead. The Black team, who was coached by Casey Connell of Arnold, played its best stretch in the beginning of the second half and cut the lead to seven or eight points. But the Gold team regrouped and got its cushion back to win easily. In addition to Woodhead's 17, Aundrea Jorgensen of Medicine Valley put up 14 points for the Gold. Kayla Locke of Arapahoe had eight and Kira Peterson of Gothenburg had seven in the winning effort. The Black team was led by Lexington's Renee Otero with 12 points. North Platte Community College volleyball recruits Amber DeCent of Paxton and Kacee Higgins of North Platte followed with eight and seven, respectively. For Woodhead, the win made her experience at the all star game that much better, although she said having fun was all that mattered to her going in. Friday's game looks to be the first of many games Woodhead will play at the McDonald-Belton gymnasium, as she has signed to play for NPCC. "Actually, it was just for fun," said Woodhead, who will also play in the NCA All-Star Game in Lincoln in July. "We all wanted to come out and have fun. Sure, it's better to win than to lose but we had quite a bit of fun and I just wanted to have fun." Woodhead said her favorite thing was getting to meet all her fellow players. She said she particularly enjoyed getting to know Katie Flaig (Wauneta-Palisade), Amanda Downey (Dundy County-Stratton) and Megan Mayfield (North Platte St. Pat's). Woodhead also spent some time with her future NPCC roommate, Otero, even though the two competed against each other in the game.
