A memorial to a victim of an Omaha mall shooting continues to give to others. For the second year, members of the Nebraska FFA Foundation are seeking nominations of high school agricultural educators/FFA advisors for the “Gary Scharf Helping Hand Award.” Nominations for the 2010 award are due March 26, said Tammy Meyer, executive director of the foundation. The award will be presented April 8 during Nebraska FFA Convention in Lincoln. Scharf, who was a victim of an Omaha mall shooting incident, grew up on a family farm near Curtis and worked in the agricultural chemical industry. Over the years he made contributions to Nebraska’s agricultural and FFA communities through years of service on the Nebraska FFA Foundation Board including a year as president in 2002-2003. Meyer said the Foundation Board felt this award was an appropriate way to recognize Scharf’s legacy by recognizing a Nebraska agricultural educator/FFA advisor who personifies school and community citizenship and service — going above and beyond. The first Scharf Helping Hand Award was presented in 2009 to Steve Schmit, agricultural educator and FFA advisor at Osceola High School. Schmit was described by nominators as caring and diligent. He received a plaque and a $500 cash award from the Nebraska FFA Foundation. In order to be considered for the ward, agricultural educators can be nominated by students, colleagues, high school officials, parents and others in the community. Nomination applications can be downloaded from the Nebraska FFA Foundation website at www.neffafoundation.org or by sending an e-mail to information@neffafoundation.org. Those who want more information or to be involved with the “Gary Scharf Helping Hand Award” may contact Meyer at tammy@neffoundation.org.
