School board approves early-out WednesdaysTell North Platte what you think

Schools will dismiss early on Wednesday afternoons next year for weekly teacher meetings.

The North Platte school board ended three months of debate Tuesday, voting unanimously to make the change, 6-0.

The regular meetings will replace the “fly by” day-long inservice meetings currently held once a month or so, said curriculum director Kate Murphy, where “someone comes in to give a presentation, wows us and leaves, and we’re left wondering what exactly do we do with this information.”

School Board President Jim Paloucek said the program will not take away teacher-student time, will not cost the district more money, and the district will do all it can to soften the impact on parents and families.

“This will restructure the time we have,” Paloucek said. “I believe it will be a better use. We’ll do what we’re doing, only better.”

Two residents addressed the board.

Stacy Slater, a parent who once told Engle to look at similar programs in Texas that seem less disruptive of classroom time, questioned the accountability of the new program.

“How will you measure how successful the program is after year one, two or three?” Slater asked.

Slater asked if reading and math scores would be expected to improve.

Engle said yes, among a lot of other things, including how students are engaged in the classrooms and writing samples.

“There are lots of indicators, including a set of measurable outcomes,” he said. “We are not short of goals.”

Slater said that paraprofessionals (teacher aides) should be included in professional development, but Engle said the district would probably have to deploy them elsewhere.

Previously Engle has said teacher aides would help monitor students during the early-out hours as part of an expanded after-school Kids Klub program.

Slater said he fully supports professional development, but does not agree this is the best program.

North Platte parent and school board candidate Kenneth Millard questioned the impact of early out Wednesdays on special education students. He has a special needs son at the high school.

The high school is in the beginning stages of how that might work, special education director Kim Cooper told him.

After the meeting, Millard said he has repeatedly asked the same question and still not received an answer, which is one reason he has filed for a seat on the school board.

In an opening statement, Murphy said the early out/teacher meetings will enhance the powerful dedication of the North Platte community to education.

“No matter our disagreements, each of us wants a powerful learning experience for our kids, every single one of them, every single day,” she said.

She said family concerns would be at the forefront of considerations

“No one wants professional development at the expense of our families,” she said.

Three months of debate

A late-start once a week for teacher meetings was first proposed in late November, but a decision was postponed at school board meetings since, in the face of a host of concerns from parents and teachers and daycare providers.

In January, officials decided it would be better to shoot for Wednesday afternoons for the program.

Beginning in late August 2010, classes will dismiss at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Kids Klub staff and teacher will supervise elementary students in the school buildings, Engle has said.

The North Platte Recreation Center staff may offer physical education programs, including intramural leagues and games, at Adams Middle School for middle students. Buses could bring students from Madison Middle School to Adams.

No plans have been revealed for the high school.

NPEA to bargain another year

In other action Tuesday, the board unanimously accepted the North Platte Education Association as the official bargaining agent for teachers in salary negotiations.

in other words, the 'democratic' school board vote was anything but democratic.

they have been doing early out on wednesdays in wyoming for several years. i think it works but i also want to know what happened to our teachers? now they want to make sure they are out the door as soon as the kids are. my teachers brought home paperwork if they did not get it done at school. they were dedicated and it was not just a job. i have graded exmas for teachers on a mining, minerals and me class and they could not even spell. maybe this time off could give them some more schooling.

I have 2 HS's and 2 Grade schoolers- I work full time, and already feel guilty about the 2 hrs of Kids Club the little ones attend. Now- make it 4 hrs with additional money owed. Top that with the fact Kids Club is already understaffed and you will probably add additonal students for the first session. I just do not think this is in my children's best interests. I also do NOT have the luxury of busing them to other schools and have no issue with the education they are currently recieving. When my father taught, the weekly meetings did not intefere with classroom time, students had high quality education, and educators were not bogged down with all the government paperwork in "triplicate". I do not know the answer, but I am not excited about this direction!

Thank you Walt! I know I can't reach every child.. as bad as I want to, it just isn't reality. Some don't care, but I'm still going to do EVERYTHING within reach I can to help my students succeed! And again, thanks for your wishes!

My simple question is why cant we do the schedule like alot of our country schools. Keep the different start dates but extend the day to 4pm. Then on Friday we are out at 12noon. That makes a heack of alot more sense. Start the day after Labor Day. Be done the Thursday before Memorial Day. That schedule has worked for many years.

kelwar23... let me save you some headaches. You will not reach every student. Yes, at times the teacher needs to adjust, but you will find out that some students don't care. If they have a poor attitude, there is generally little you can do. Best of luck in your future career.

Honeygrams.. while I do agree that education and the passion for learning starts at home, not all parents are TRAINED to educate children on math, science, language arts, etc. If one or two students in a class is doing poorly, it may be the student.. but if the whole class is doing poorly, it's probably the teaching method being used. Parents DO need to be in their children's lives, but as a future educator, I know that if students fall through the cracks, it's partly my fault. If the student is not understanding, it's my JOB to help them get to that point. If all parents could do it without training, then we wouldn't have teachers, would we?

My kids learn just fine at school. I dont really mind them taking a couple hours a week and letting my kids out early to improve teaching if that indeed really happens. however i think they could have picked a Friday instead of a day in the middle of the week. It would have made students who miss on fridays because parents travel miss less time. :) It's not like we all have a say anyways. They do what they want and expect us all to conform.

Walst well said education starts at home and always has. I am so tired of reading about what about me on here . Please you all need to spend more quality time with your children instead of having your nose stuck to the computer TV or Cell phone. You people act like it is the schools fault for our children doing so bad in school. When in fact you need to take a more positive role in your your childrens life. You had them now take care of them and teach them that they are a valuable asset to the future.

According to the article the student/teacher time will remain the same and it will cost the district no more money. So my question is...why are people so fired up about this?

Thinking about it, State law requires the students to be there. We all got the speach from the "nasty lady" when our kids entered middle school the last few years. It is not a day care, granted, but if the students are required by law to attend, the teachers should be there too.

What about the poor parents? Are you kidding me? Since when did school become a daycare for your child? I, for one, am excited about this opportunity for the educators. In the end, they want to do what's best for our children...so why not support them in doing that?

Technically, this won't give them more time out of school. It will simply rearrange it. 2 hours 4 times a month as opposed to 1 full day (Friday) each month.

Nice. Half of my graduating class couldn't even spell "graduate" and now we are giving them MORE time out of school. They are aleady out of school more than they are in, and there are holidays now I had never even heard of before. How do we expect our kids to learn if they are never in the classrooms? So now, the kids will be at yet ANOTHER disadvantage, and the parents will have to possibly leave early or make other arrangements to pick up their kids. Dumb decision. It's sad that our children don't learn anymore.

I agree, this is the dumbest thing I have heard the geniouses doing lately. The kids already have WAY TO MANY days off! It's no wonder they have to go to school WAY later than we ever used to. Also, like the previous person said, WHAT ABOUT THE POOR PARENTS!? MOST people have to work till at least 5 and since half this town is railroad, LOTS of people work in the afternoons and nights also. Well, as long as they do whatever works for them, that's all that matters right? I mean I'm sure the teachers need MORE time for "meetings" *sigh* rediculous!

retarded decision! I think these kids have to many days out already. What about parents who work till 3 or later? What about the kids education? I geuss shove more stuff into their heads in a shorter period of time? I don't like this idea. Shoot when we was kids we got out of school for christmas and maybe 1 snow day a year that was it, now days too many days off to list!
