Two years of planning, fund raising, hard work and practice came to a climax Jan. 3 when the Hershey High School band returned from their trip to the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio. The band left on a charter bus the afternoon of Dec. 29 and arrived at Sea World in San Antonio, Texas just as the park was opening for the day on Dec. 30. New Year’s Eve day began very early with a marching competition. The Hershey band, the smallest in the competition, marched their field show and competed in the parade review. Following the competition the band spent the afternoon at San Antonio’s famous River Walk. That evening all 1,100 band students who competed during the day came together for a dinner dance and awards ceremony at the San Antonio Convention Center. The Hershey band won third place in the field show competition and third place in the parade review competition. After celebrating the arrival of 2010, the band headed back to the Marriott for some much needed rest. The first day of the New Year began with a mass band rehearsal with all 1,100 band students in the halftime performance at the Alamo Bowl game. Following the mass rehearsal the Hershey students saw a movie at the IMAX theater, visited the Alamo, and when on a cruise through the River Walk. The band’s final day in San Antonio began with another mass band rehearsal at Alamo Dome. After lunch and some shopping, the band arrived at the Alamo Dome two hours before the game. The stadium was already buzzing with activity. The band marched into the Alamo Dome past the Michigan State football team. They enjoyed pre-game performances from the Michigan State and Texas Tech bands. At halftime the mass band, color guard and dance team marched onto the field and filled the stadium with the sounds of “sunshine” songs. “That was the most awesome thing I’ve done in my life!” said band member Christy Freihage. “It was intense!” said Ty Carter. “It was a good experience and I would love to do it again!” Wes Layton said. Hershey Band Director Lori Evans said, “We had an absolutely wonderful time. The students and chaperones were great and we would love to do this again.” “The Hershey Band worked hard for this well-deserved trip and we had an excellent victory!” said Dawn Donner.
