Next week, the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners will set salaries for elected officials, including their own.

Each commissioner currently earns $27,820 a year, plus medical, dental and life insurance as well as contributions to a retirement fund.

The county board of commissioners set the salaries – including the county treasurer, assessor, attorney, clerk, etc. -- every four years. This time, they will set salaries from 2011 to 2015. The schedule typically includes an allowance for an annual cost-of-living increase.

Commissioner Joe Hewgley has compiled a comparability study of salaries for elected officials in several Nebraska counties that are about the same size as Lincoln County. Hewgley presented the study Monday to board members Willis Roethemeyer and Duane Deterding. The board briefly discussed the situation and took copies to study the particulars.

“We looked at where we’re at, which is pretty much in the middle of the range all the way through,” said Roethemeyer, the commissioner chairman. “That’s about where we want to be.”

Hewgley compiled information on salaries in Buffalo, Hall, Madison, Scottsbluff, Cass, Dodge, Adams and Platte counties.

The board has until Jan. 15 to set the salaries, but action is expected next week, Roethemeyer said.

Weed board seat

In other business, the board appointed Bob Nedrig of Sutherland to the board of the Weed Control Authority. Nedrig will complete the term of Mitch White, who recently resigned due to other obligations.

Nedrig is a retired farmer.

A week ago, the board appointed Robert Kohler to replace White, but discovered that Kohler lived on the wrong side of the street that is North Platte’s west city limit.

By state statute, some members of the weed control board must reside inside city and village limits. Others must live in rural areas of the county. White’s seat was inside the limits.
