An Iowa man with a history of stealing rental cars struck in North Platte in late November. The Nebraska State Patrol reported that Matthew Letner was pulled over Nov. 28 when a trooper discovered the rental car Letner was driving had been reported stolen. Letner allegedly rented the vehicle in Newport Beach, CA, in July. Letner offered to simply pay what he owed, but the company said they wanted their car back and they wanted charges pressed. Letner was booked on possession of stolen property, a felony charge. The spokesperson reported he bonded out of Lincoln County jail Nov. 30. He immediately rented another vehicle, a 2008 Dodge Caliber, from Bob Spady Buick Pontiac GMC. Neither Letner nor the vehicle have been seen by authorities since. The spokesperson said Letner paid the initial rental fee in cash but left a bogus credit card number to cover any extended usage. The vehicle was due back at Spady Dec. 7, according to the spokesperson. Letner is due in Lincoln County court Jan. 13 to answer for the stolen property charge. The spokesperson said notices about both the car and Letner have been issued by the patrol nationally. They also said Letner has a criminal history of this behavior.
