Icy road conditions led to a fatal accident on I-80 Friday morning near Maxwell, according to the Nebraska State Patrol. Trooper J.J. Connelly told the Bulletin that around 5:30 a.m. Shawn Mister, 22, a Hastings native, was westbound when he lost control of his 2000 Ford Explorer. The vehicle rolled into the ditch on the north side of the road at mile marker 188. Mister was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Connelly said that an hour before he responded to Mister’s crash he responded to what he called a “carbon copy accident” west of North Platte. A 2001 Chevy truck lost control on the icy road and rolled two and a half times, like Mister’s vehicle. Connelly said that the speeds in both accidents were similar. The difference was the two people involved in the earlier crash walked away even though the roof of the truck's cab was crushed down to dashboard level. Connelly said they were treated and released Friday. They were wearing seatbelts, Connelly reported.
