Thanks to a $9,500 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety, LCSO deputies spent an additional 159.5 hours of patrol, Chief Deputy Dean Sparks said.

The operation began Nov. 23 and concluded Nov. 29. LSCO deputies made 212 traffic contacts; issued 34 citations and 178 warnings.

The North Platte Police Department identified 39 seatbelt violations and one child restraint violation and 52 citations were issued for various traffic violations during “click-it-or-ticket” week. Police also arrested six people on outstanding warrants during the campaign, according to North Platte Police Chief Martin Gutschenritter.

A similar effort to cut down on drunk drivers is underway and will continue until Jan. 2. It too is funded by grants from the Highway Safety Office.

Like the click-it-or-ticket program, officers spend more hours than normal patrolling for drunk drivers during the “you drink, you drive, you lose” program.

Nearly half of North Platte's motorists fail to buckle up, Gutschenritter said. The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety has a goal of 90.6 percent seatbelt usage.

Gutschenritter said seatbelts are the single most effective piece of safety equipment in vehicles.

Gutschenritter said North Platte police officers will continue to aggressively enforce seatbelt violations and he asks for the public’s voluntary compliance.
