Brooke Ludemann, 16, of North Platte and the Miss Chadron Outstanding Teen 2010 wants to be sure kids have good coats to wear. Ludemann is promoting her second annual "Coats for Kids" drive, to provide a way for area families who may have good, outgrown, used winter coats to share them with children who do not. "Young children grow quickly and there are families that cannot afford a new coat each year," Ludemann said. "Many times a child outgrows a coat before they wear it out. Times are tough and this is a way to share with our neighbors." Last year's coat drive netted 178 coats, which Lundemann collected, cleaned and delivered to North Platte area families. Her goal this year is to collect more than 200 coats and expand the project to include scarves, hats and mittens. Coats for adults are also accepted. Collection boxes are in place at North Platte Public Library, Bank of the West, United Methodist Church, First National Bank, Kids First Preschool, Church of Latter-Day Saints, and the main Sun-Mart grocery store. Gently used or new coats will be collected until mid-December and be ready for distribution before Christmas break.
