A man Lincoln County District Court Judge John Murphy once called a “one-man crime spree” had further charges against him dropped, due to the fact that he is already in prison. According to documents filed Tuesday, charges of theft by shoplifting and receiving stolen property against Shane Reed, 22, were dropped by the County Attorney’s office. In January, Shane Reed was sentenced to two terms of 1-3 years in prison for theft, to be served concurrently. He received another consecutive sentence of one year in prison for theft, and a year for possessing a short shotgun. The crimes occurred in 2007. The gun charge sentence is to be served concurrently with the other one-year sentence. In a feature story about plea bargains the Bulletin ran in July, County Attorney Rebecca Harling said that often there is no incentive for the state to pursue all the charges against a suspect, because no additional time would be sentenced. Dropping charges against the already imprisoned Reed will save the state the time and expense of a new trial.
