MPCC to be sued by Omaha community collegeTell North Platte what you think

Metropolitan Community College in Omaha intends to file a lawsuit against all the other community colleges in the state.

NebraskaLand National BankFREE Mobile Banking NOW AVAILABLE!

This according to Omaha attorney Bob Cannella on Wednesday. Cannella will represent Metro in the proceedings.

Cannella told the Bulletin, “Metro’s position is that they have lost $9-10 million dollars in state aid due to what the other community colleges did.”

When asked what he meant by “did,” Cannella said that question would be answered when the lawsuit was filed.

He estimated that would happen in the next seven to 10 days.

Eastern Nebraska media outlets reported earlier Wednesday that the lawsuit would be filed in Lancaster County. However, Cannella told the Bulletin, “We’re actually reconsidering that. We may file it here in Douglas County.”

Mid Plains Community College Director of Public Information and Marketing Chuck Salestrom was reached for comment, though he flatly declined to do so.

“Due to the pending litigation we’re not going to be talking about that,” he stated.

When asked to shed some light on the acrimonious relationship between Metro and Nebraska’s other community colleges, Salestrom also refused, saying only that the animosity was nothing new.

Earlier this year, Metropolitan was booted from the state’s community college association for failing to pay its yearly dues in full, according to a report from 10/11 News. Metro countered by saying it withheld the money in protest of what it perceived as “unfair treatment” from the other schools.

It is unclear at this time what impact that event had on the imminent lawsuit.

Talk Back

I commend the Bulletin for researching and reporting this story. God only knows how bad Hamjustice and the other administrators are wringing their hands right now ... crying because people want to hold them all accountable.

Ahhh ... Hamjustice raises her ugly head once again. Regular TB readers should remember when she ADMITTED to working for NPCC and drinking the kool aid. Heh. Sorry, Hamjustice, you are part of the problem NOT part of the solution.

I remember the last time NPCC got into trouble for advancing nursing students after their chemistry professor failed them. Turned out the college was passing along students who were not up to par. Hamjustice embarassed herself then by sticking up for the admin then. She continues to do so now. How sad.

I am not sure how recently, but I believe that the Bulletin has previously reported on the controversy which has been developing among the community colleges. This problem does not relate to stimulus money; it relates to state aid. For more than a year Metro has been disagreeing with the other community colleges about what funding formula should be used for state aid to the community colleges. The details are probably too long and involved for some of you to care about. However, Metro thinks it should get the biggest portion of state funding because it had the most students in the last few years. In the past, I think, the formula was pretty much even between all the College areas. Then, for several years, the formula was adjusted to help keep the state budget balanced. If any College has adjusted its figures to try for more money, it might have been Metro? I don''t know, but maybe the Postsecondary Commission on Higher Education needs to audit everyone''s enrollment figures.

I almost wonder if the reason they are suing might have something to do with federal stimulus money. That speculation would make sense if all the community colleges were required to accept the money in order for the state to receive it. As a side note, what is with all the trolls that keep violating rule number 4? The purpose of talkback isn''t to criticize the authors writing style or to whine about "Misleading Headlines". Read the story. Comment on the content. Quit trying to insult the people who provide you this information. The NPB staff don''t force you to read it. Don''t like the reporting style, put in an application with the staff and prove that you could do it better.

Headlines are suppose to grab the readers attention and make them want to read the story. You don''t tell the whole story in a headline. Ben didn''t lie....MPCC is being sued. The fact that it is only one of a group of colleges being sued is explained in the article. I don''t know what this whole thing is about but I bet it results in an increased cost to the students. I hope we are given more details when they are available.

I''m curious to see what all the other colleges did. It sounds to me like someone is throwing a hissy fit because enrollment numbers are down, which is happening all over the map.

The headline personalizes the story to North Platte and the surrounding area. I don''t think that is a problem. I also don''t think that it is accurate to say that Metro is suing many colleges. Community colleges represent six areas in Nebraska. Some of the areas have one campus while some have two or three campuses. If the lawsuit proceeds, I think that Metro will sue the Areas and not the individual campuses. Therefore, only 5 areas would be sued by another area.

I actually don''t work for NPCC. And, for the record, "Remember when NPCC got caught lowering standards in their chemistry classes and trying to get a teacher to pass inadequate students and she refused to?" This claim was never proven, even after the audits that happened after the dismissed professor was let go. Npdood, whomever you are, sorry you don''t like me. Must have a dull life. :)

I disagree with Hamjustice. The headline is accurate. Read the story. Hamjustice is a NPCC apologist. Remember when NPCC got caught lowering standards in their chemistry classes and trying to get a teacher to pass inadequate students and she refused to? Hamjustice, who WORKS FOR NPCC, stood up for the injustice!!!

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the headlines. It''s factual. You just have to read the story, as with ANY headlines, to get the details. MPCC IS being sued by Metropolitan CC. So, why the whine?

The headline intentionally misleads the readers to believe Metropolitan is ONLY suing MPCC...when in reality, it''s many colleges being sued by Metropolitan. I admit it''s a nice try to create controversy about MPCC, but there''s a lot of schools involved in this and are at the brunt of Metropolitan''s selfishness. Why don''t you write a headline, "Blood Spilled on MPCC Campus Today," because a student had a bloody nose there...?
