The Nebraska U.S. Attorney’s Office reported that a Winnebago man was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for killing eagles illegally. Fish and Wildlife authorities had been receiving reports of eagle carcasses along the Missouri River in the area of Macy, Neb. Agents learned that someone had been shooting the raptors. Lamar Bertucci, 40, was arrested April 2 after investigators found eagle feathers and carcasses at his home while serving a search warrant. Witnesses told U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officers that they had been present when Bertucci shot the eagles. He then sold eagle and hawk feathers to customers who wanted to make headdresses. Bertucci was convicted July 10. He has been in federal custody since his arrest. Five other men are currently charged in the crime, as well.
