A collision between two semis on Interstate 80 Monday morning briefly shut down the road between North Platte and Maxwell. The State Patrol reported that an eastbound semi hauling a trailer full of cantaloupe ran into a trailer full of meat that was parked on the shoulder of the interstate around 9:15 a.m. The impact caused the trailer of the moving semi to come unhitched. It ended up in the middle of the road. The trailer was torn open and cantaloupe was strewn across the road. The patrol reported that a food inspector was called in to inspect the contents of both the trailers involved. The inspector determined that the accident had catastrophically damaged to both shipments and both were condemned. Fuel spillage resulted in a gas fire that was quickly extinguished. The eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed from exit 179 to exit 190 for approximately 45 minutes, the patrol reported. After the road was reopened, traffic was limited to the passing lane while clean up continued. No one was injured in the collision.
