A Sutherland resident died six days after his car rolled as he swerved to avoid a collision in the morning fog.

Mark Lutz, 30, died Monday night at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Lincoln County Chief Deputy Dean Sparks said.

Lutz rolled his car at 8 a.m. Sept. 16. He was westbound on U.S. Highway 30, nearly three miles west of Sutherland. As he approached Sarben Road, an unknown vehicle turned from Sarben Road east onto U.S. Highway 30.

Lutz swerved to avoid a crash, over corrected, spun 180 degrees and then rolled one and a quarter times, Sparks said.

Investigators attribute the accident to dense fog. The accident report said Lutz did not see the second vehicle until it was too late. Investigators doubt that the second vehicle knew that Lutz's 1996 Chevy Tahoe was in the area.

An ambulance from Sutherland transported Lutz to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. Lutz was later taken to Good Samaritan in Kearney, where he died.

The Lincoln County Attorney’s Office is not requesting an autopsy. Preliminary reports indicate Lutz died of a pulmonary embolism after suffering a thoracic fracture in the crash.

No alcohol was involved. Lutz was wearing a seat belt.

Charges are not expected to be filed, Sparks said.
