New owner Dave Stearns said the store would reopen next week, featuring a revitalized line of convenience snacks and supplies, plus a deli, as well as the same selections as in the past, and some of the same clerks.

Stearns and partner Greg Gifford bought the Barn Store at auction Aug. 24 and paid $149,000, according to county records.

Mentzer Oil was the second bidder.

Union Pacific workers are frequent customers at the convenience store and gas station, which was built in 1974 at Buffalo Bill Ave. and Front St., a main road to Bailey Yard.

Stearns owned the North Platte Sears store for 13 years until he retired in May 2007. Gifford recently sold the Royal Colonial Inn, which he and partner Ryan Sellers purchased in 2003.

Stearns said he and Gifford were in business together three years ago. They bought the bankrupt SGS Sanitation company, put it back on its feet and then sold it.

John Haines, one of the operators of the old Tomahawk Truck Stop, built The Barn Store in 1974, Stearns said.

Railroad worker Kenny McCarty and his wife ran it for a few years, then sold it to Roxanne Wendt, who managed it for several years, but recently put it up for auction.

Another railroad stop in the west part of North Platte, the Log Cabin on W. Rodeo Rd. is also closed for renovation. The Log Cabin plans to reopen Sept. 7.
