The autopsy results are in for a local man who was shot and killed June 27 by a Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy. Robbin Gastineau allegedly attacked Deputy Tom Courter with a decorative samurai sword, prompting the shooting. Lt. Lynn Williams of the Nebraska State Patrol reported in June that Gastineau’s autopsy was scheduled for June 29 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. . Williams confirmed Aug. 13 that the autopsy results had come back from the pathologist, and that the results had been sent to the special prosecutor appointed to the case, Charles Brewster of Kearney. Williams also said that the results could not be made public until a grand jury had heard the case, as required by Nebraska law. That hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9.
The incident The incident occurred at 19350 West Oregon Trail Road just south of Hershey at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday morning, June 27, according to Lt. Lynn Williams. The trailer house is the residence of Karin Gastineau, Robbin Gastineau’s ex-wife. She also has gone by the names of Karin Shaw and Karin Johnson. The couple had an on-again, off-again relationship for years and had been the source of numerous calls for deputies. Deputy Courter responded to a 911 call at 1:45 a.m. The 911 Center received the call but it was disconnected before the caller said anything, according to Williams. Courter arrived at the trailer house moments later and could hear a woman screaming inside. Courter kicked in the door of the trailer and found Robbin and Karin fighting. Courter Tazed Robbin Gastineau but the probes landed too close together, the Bulletin learned. Robbin Gastineau kept coming at the deputy. Courter Tazed Gastineau a second time but, again, it was ineffective and Gastineau continued to come. It was then, according to Williams, that Gastineau grabbed a decorative Samurai sword that hung on the wall and attacked the deputy. Courter, an Iraqi war veteran, fired two shots at Gastineau, hitting him both times. The Bulletin learned that one of the bullets hit Gastineau in his heart. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Nebraska State Patrol was called in to investigate the incident. Karin Gastineau was removed from the home to a safe house while the crime scene was processed.
