Board stands firm on stimulus fund rejectionTell North Platte what you think

The North Platte Housing Authority listened to resident’s comments Thursday but said they made the right decision to reject $588,000 in stimulus funds to improve the 250 units they manage.

NebraskaLand National BankFREE Mobile Banking NOW AVAILABLE!

The meeting was held to evaluate personnel, according to board president Ed Rieker. There was much speculation that the board is considering firing executive director Deb Morgan.

Dave Harrold, a former board member who resigned in January, asked if the board if they could review their decision and reverse it.

Rieker said the board could not.

Rieker and the board has been under fire for rejecting the funds, the fourth largest amount in Nebraska.

Rieker said the Housing Authority had $500,000 in their account and could do all the improvements Morgan wanted without accepting the stimulus funds.

Many consider Rieker and the board’s decision political in nature.

In fact, Harrold said the decision is in direct opposition of the board’s mission to take care of the homes of their residents. He also said the decision hurts the local economy by not providing extra jobs and work for local people.

Morgan said the Housing Authority was required to spend all of the $588,000 locally.

The money, if rejected by the Housing Authority, will not return to the U.S. Treasury, according to a spokesman from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. It will transfer to another community who requests it, possibly from out of state.

George Nila, maintenance supervisor for the Housing Authority, said the Autumn Park facility is in need of repairs. Many have complained of the lack of security after break-ins increased this year.

“We have elderly that live out there sometimes they can fall and trip. That could lead to a law suit or something,” Nila said.

Some have noted that the board said they had the money already but the necessary repairs have yet to be made.

Lincoln County Commissioner Joe Hewgley asked the board to change their minds.

“The funds are really for those residents of those places,” Hewgley said. “They are the ones that benefit and live there, and visitors that come and park in the parking lots and use the sidewalks. The money is not for Executive Director Deb Morgan or the staff, it is for those people. So I would hope that you would reconsider that.”

The board, Rieker, Dee May, Glenn Johnson and Savannah Sellers went into executive session to discuss personnel matters. Rieker said no decision would be made Thursday.

There has been friction between the board, appointed by the North Platte mayor, and Morgan for some time.

When you consider that Congress just approved Obama''s $3.5 TRILLION budget this doesn''t really matter much one way or the other. A completely bankrupt nation going further into debt doesn''t really have any money to give away does it? Take the money or reject it and it makes no difference at all in the end. How long can this go on before it collapses around our ears?! In light of our president pledging to do our part to raise $1.1 trillion for the International Monetary Fund I would rather see the board go ahead and take the money, since there''s no money for either.

Please...Mayor Kashke........If you can not remove the members on the Board.....Please, for this City''s sake at least ask for 1 or 2 resignations......I''m sure you know who I am talking about. Those that have a very narrow view of the tax situation & why. To be a watchful steward of our tax dollars, and spend them wisely is one thing....to reject money already allocated to North Platte which would help individual workers, merchants, and most of all the residents of public housing for the city of North Platte is quite another. This has been going on long enough and something really does need to be done, and as far as I''m concerned, the sooner the better.

Dear user, only a foolish conservative like yourself,, larry the calbe guy and jeff foxworthy would think that this is a bad idea. It has not been stolen from you and I and every other taxpayer in this country. Someone has obviously been listening to one too many talk shows hosted by the incredibly insane Rush Limbaugh. I, being part of the future generation, in no way shape or form believe a stimulus package delivered by this diverse, well established and logical administration is "rape of [my] generation..." whatever that may mean. Henceforth, I believe it is the board''s fiscal and social responsibility to accept the stimulus in order to enhance the chance of a better world, a world that may be cured of the hellacious problems created by the previous generations, for our future generation''s (my generation''s) tomorrow.

Dear user, only a fool like yourself thinks this is free money. It has been stolen from you and I and every other taxpayer in this country by an irresponsible administration and Congress to distribute pork under the guise of stimulating the economy. It is a rape of future generations productivity and only the corrupt and ignorant would encourage accepting this travesty.

The money is to be used to fix up the ramshackle "houses" that the city places our less fortunate. Because are too poor to raise themselves out of the situation they are in. So the city gives them the top of the line slum houses to live in and calls it a bargain because they pay for it. I have lived in North Platte too long, (almsost 3 years) and I see the corruption and perversion that happens every day. If they rejected it because they already had the money, then were is all the money going? I hope to see the improvements soon.

To reject this money and send it elsewhere is not only ridiculous but totally irresponsible. Regardless of your political background or stand on the stimulus package - it''s here....period! The money is going to be given to some city, somewhere. Hopefully someplace where their elected or appointed officials have more sense than they do in North Platte.

Meaningless grandstanding is all the action by the Housing Board amounted to. It just hurt North Platte and will have no consequence to the Stimulus bill. "Greedy and irresponsible entity", eh, bigsky? Your contempt for all things public is pathetic. You and Ed would make quite a team. Shame on the Housing Board.

The bailout should have NEVER happened and all "stimulus" that comes from debt should be rejected. We actually gave FUTURE tax money (T-bills sold to China) to bail out banks, the banking system had to know the system couldn''t hold up, this crash has been talked about and forecasted for years. Now they''re going to lend us our own money AT INTEREST!?! WHAT? They''re not even really doing that, they''re sitting on the money to save their own behinds. This stimulus is a joke, throw trillions of dollars into the economy, prop up an economy that has very low trust in the government and/or banking system, this may do something for a little while, but watch inflation go through the roof. Ask yourself who gains from this. Ask yourself what you''re going to do when your money is junk, it can and is happening and a small portion of the population is willing to wake up and stop the bleeding, a small portion of the population actually wants to help people help themselves by teaching them how to think for themselves and not just accept what their told by those in a position to gain from directing peoples thoughts and actions. Don''t listen to me, don''t listen to politicians, go look it up yourself, it''s out there. Ask yourself how you pay off debt with more debt and make it work, you can''t. I''m sure the people on the North Platte Housing Authority understands the stimulus money is JUNK and should not only be rejected by them, but should be rejected by all, let the market correct itself, yes it will hurt, but the problem would end much sooner than what we''re doing now.

Place my vote in favor of rejecting the funds from the infamous stimulus bill. Unfortunately the money will go to some other greedy and irresponsible entity. Besides, all the Board had on their work list, according to an earlier story, was to upgrade some sidewalks, work on the grass and get some security cameras for Autumn Park. Pretty cheap work. I still would like to know what sort of strings were attached to taking this money. The Federal Govt. doesn''t give up money expecting nothing in return.

The housing board needs to be replaced! This action of theirs is one of the most illogical actions I have seen! The money was there to benefit the residents of NP and local contractors would have benefitted from the work. This "Board" says they have the money but don''t seem to be using it to maintain the properties that are supposed to benefit from it. It would appear that WNTA member/supporter Ed Reiker has let his personal feelings interfer with his responsibilities as a Board member and the others have let him lead the way. Mayor Kashcke - let''s reappoint logical citizens to this board and see if we can still get the funds for this community!

Maybe the North Platte Housing Authority doesn''t want to take dirty money? I hope you understand this is how the "government" gets money into circulation that shouldn''t be there, they give it to organizations as a "gift" or stimulus or whatever you want to call it....... trillions of dollars later we have inflation that makes buying Roman Noodles look like a night at Whiskey Creek!! Yes I understand the money is allocated and will just go somewhere else, but understand this, that money is NOT ours to spend, that money belongs to future tax payers, it''s not right to take from the future of this country to fund today. If we want to fund today then we should pay C-A-S-H. America is about to get booted into a pit so deep we''ll be lucky to get out of it and there''s plenty of people out there just waiting for us to fail, they want it and they''re getting it. It''s not right to take something just because it''s offered to you, you need to ask yourself, at what cost? The Housing Authority says it has things under control, who are we to say different?

How could the Board have $500,000 in "their" account and not be hard at work making the low income housing more energy efficient? Given the economy, saving this nest egg is risky, I think. Autumn Park needs attention in a variety of areas -- well, get busy, board members and spend that $500,000 you have been saving. If you really don''t want the stimulus money, then use what you have and put that money where your rhetoric is.

I''m glad Marc Kaschke reads this website because he needs to know that North Platte taxpayers disagree with this ridiculous decision. Who is this Ed Rieker anyway? I hope he has the cajones to tackle this problem!!!! Make it right Mark!!!

There are a few strings such as needing to purchase goods and services from local vendors, making sure you involve all parties, etc. There are less strings then what the Housing Authority deals with from HUD on a daily basis.

This decision is contra to common sense. The idea that you already have money in the bank to do these items is not material. Why spend your local funds for this project, when there are federal funds available?

Local funds, in government parlance, have much more flexibility and are much harder to come by.

Marc, time to step up. Either explain how this move benefits North Platte, explain the politics behind it, or reverse the decision.

I think mover-shaker has the answer, we need our mayor to intervene in this mess. We are the laughing stock of the state thanks to this self-centered board. What about the residents? What about the problems in the homes you were charged to manage? The decision was a personal one by Rieker and the others went along with it. This is what you get with the "Western Nebraska Taxpayer''s Association." A TOTAL LACK of common sense
