The rumors that the Comstock Windmill Festivals were cancelled this year were premature. The festivals, now called the Comstock Music Series, will kick off this weekend with the country festival and will continue July 17 – 20 with the rock bands. The former owner, Henry Nuxoll, is facing criminal charges of passing bad checks in Custer County Court. A jury trial is scheduled in court on checks authorities say were written in June and July of 2007. The checks total more than $87,000. A Missouri man, Jim Proskocil, who grew up near the Nebraska sandhills where the festivals are held, purchased the property and intends to continue the festival under the new name. Proskocil took over the festivals after reports of underage drinking and a series of financial problems threatened to cancel the concerts for good. Proskocil was forced to move the concerts back a month when artists became leery and demanded an additional $100,000 up front. The first concert is the country concert and it is Thursday through Sunday July 10-13. The State Patrol is already planning ahead for any drinking and driving that may occur. More than 160 hours of overtime will be paid for by an $8,000 highway safety grant. In 2007, troopers made contact with 345 violators with a variety of violations ranging from drunken driving to minors in possession of alcohol. Troopers issued 134 citations for speeding, 18 juveniles were cited for being minors in possession of alcohol and two people were arrested for drunken driving. Gates opened at noon Wednesday and alcohol will be served. Thursday’s concert includes Stumblin’ Jones, The Hayseed Cowboys, the Lost Outlaw Band and the Midnight Magic Band. Friday night features an Extreme Bull Riding Tour, Jim Rice and Trent Tomlinson. On Saturday the bull riding tour continues and Leroy VanDyke, and Jessica Andrews perform. Sunday will wrap up with Sheila Greenland, T.G. Sheppard and John Conlee.
