Three-time world champion Will Lowe was the best of the bareback riders at the Nebraskaland Days Buffalo Bill Rodeo. Lowe scored an 86 Thursday night, two points better than Bo Casper of Ft. Scott, Kan. Lowe, the 5 feet-5 inch, 150-pound sensation, earned a new saddle for his efforts, made by Zach Ringer of North Platte, plus a check for $2,280. Steven Dent of Mullen was the only bareback rider to challenge the leaders on the final night of the four-day rodeo in North Platte. Dent rode to an 80 aboard Bartender to finish in a tie for sixth with Caleb Bennett of Morgan, Utah.
Trail Boss In a special ceremony, Eddie Guynan of North Platte received the “Trail Boss” award for outstanding dedication to the rodeo for 21 years. Guynan reminisced with the Bulletin about his years riding bareback, from 1951-1960. He won three Nebraska bareback titles and two state all-round earning titles during those years. Among his biggest memories as a member of the Hall of Fame Buffalo Bill rodeo committee was the manufacturing of the "crow’s nest" rodeo offices and broadcasting platform in 1989. He and his crew got it done in 26 days.
Saturday was a tough night on the saddle broncs for four Hyannis cowboys. Matt Hebbert was the only one of the four to go the distance, and just scored a 55. Kaleb Asay of Powell, Wyo. rode to an 82 aboard Secret Agent to win the overall event, easing past Morgan Forbes of Kaycee, Wyo, who had an 81. Asay picked up a check for $2,764.50. In barrel racing, Britnay Fleck of Solen, N.D. raced to a 17.47 Saturday to work her way into third place. No one could catch the leaders who raced on opening day. Jackie Jatzlau of Giddings, Texas won the event with a time of 17.29 and Aimee Kay of Bluff Dale, Texas was second at 17.39. Diann Bukowski of Falcon, S.D. raced to sixth place Saturday with a time of 17.65. The bulls got the best of the riders Saturday, tossing every one of them. Consequently, Tyler Cowan of Ft. Pierre, S.D. earned the win for his ride Wednesday, and the $2,933.31 purse. Tyson Cox of Purdum wrestled a steer in 5.1 seconds Saturday, the best time of the night, but not fast enough to finish in the money. Likewise, no competitor Saturday could break into the winners in team roping or tie down roping. The total payout for the rodeo was $82,118.
