Beginning in December, west central Nebraska residents will be able to listen to classic rock and roll on their FM radios. Rob Mandeville, general manger of radio stations KODY, 1240-AM, and KXNP, KX104-FM, announced Thursday that their new radio station’s format would be classic rock. Called The Hawk, the station will broadcast 100,000 watts on the 98.5 frequency. Listeners should be able to listen to the station in a 60-mile radius of North Platte, Mandeville said. Mandeville said the format would feature classic rock music from such artists such as The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Eagles and Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as Van Halen, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty and Eric Clapton to name just a few. The station will also feature the popular morning show duo of Bob and Tom. The Bob and Tom show is hosted by Bob Kevoian and Tom Griswold; they are joined by Chick McGee who acts as sports commentator as well as comic foil, and Kristi Lee, who is the news anchor. The show is a comedy variety show with significant interaction with its listeners. Each day, there are usually several guests on the show, including many comedians seeking a national fan base, but also sports stars and other celebrities. During the show, pre-recorded comic songs and skits are often played, including many from a large library of archived pieces. Sometimes called "America's Funniest Morning Show," Bob & Tom's brand of bawdy and irreverent humor have made them a favorite morning show in many markets across the country. The show is broadcast from radio station WFBQ in Indianapolis, Ind., and has been syndicated nationally since 1995. The show will air from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Mondays through Fridays. Mandeville said he hoped to have the station up and on the air sometime in December. The two North Platte stations were sold to Armada Media Inc., of Fond du Lac Wis., in September. Armada owns 22 stations in South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Nebraska. They recently purchased the High Plains Radio Group with stations in Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska, including McCook. The deal for the two North Platte stations and two Holdredge stations was worth $4.5 million, according to Radio Ink magazine. It is anticipated the sale will be closed in 90 days pending FCC approval. Mandeville said the KODY and KX-104 would continue their formats. He said the station’s contracts with the Huskers would continue as usual.
The other commercial radio station group in North Platte, Mix 97.1 and Goodtime Oldies 1410-AM, are also planning a new FM station in the coming months. It will broadcast on 107.5 but Chuck Schwartz, general manager, said he was not yet ready to announce their format or date of air.
